Hello. I am John Lenhart and I am incredibly excited to be teaching this year at QCIE/QISS. I am originally from Sandusky, Ohio, which is resort town on the Northern Shore of Lake Erie. I graduated from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, where I received my Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a minor in Anthropology. In 1999, I joined the United States Navy as a Surface Warfare/Engineering Officer and completed my active duty service in 2003. My military service career provided me, at an early age, with an opportunity to learn how to work well with others, to become a better listener, to become a better teacher, and to lead by example. This experience, although quite challenging at times, helped me to form a professional identity. I also learned to recognize that the characteristics and traits that make us all different usually end up becoming our greatest assets while working together.

I detached from the Navy in Norfolk, Virginia and began pursuing a long term career in the service industry. I truly enjoy this line of work and find that my managerial skills are a great fit in this profession. I have over 20 years work experience in Food and Beverage as a restaurant owner and operator, General Manager, Bar Manager and most recently, a Wine Director and Sommelier in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The aspect that I enjoy most about this line of work is the ability to develop long lasting relationships with guests and to form connections with people from all over the United States and around the world.

Thankfully and gratefully, my life has gotten very full and busy within the past 10 years. I am married to the woman of my dreams, my soul mate, Jessica, and we have been blessed with two amazing children – Penelope and Simon. While our children were very young, Jessica and I worked opposite schedules so that we could both play an integral and equal role in their development. Recognizing that this reality would change once the kids began to attend school, I made a decision to pursue a new career path that would allow us to continue to grow together as a family. Teaching was the perfect fit! For the past few years, I have been substitute teaching in the Dare County School system and recently earned my TEFL Core Curriculum certification through the University of Toronto.

We are very grateful to have landed here, teaching abroad at QISS. As a family, we enjoy being outside and living by the water. Qingdao is an ideal location for us. We all love to swim and relax at the beach. I also enjoy running, reading, cooking, yoga, tennis, soccer and football. I look forward to possibly coaching here at QISS as well, offering me an additional opportunity to develop even stronger bonds with the students. We are incredibly thrilled to be in China, providing us with the ability to travel and experience so many wonderful places and activities in this great country. I look forward to a wonderful year here at QISS, full of adventures, challenges, learning and amazing opportunities for growth.
